Engine Number location

Hi

Whereabouts on the block will i find my engine number

From the shop manual:

The engine number is the same as the VIN number. It is stamped on the top surface of the crankcase, just forward of the valve lifter (crankcase) cover on the left side. Toward the right side on this same surface is the production code number - it is stamped upside down. An "X" before the production code number indicates a series 60-50-70-700 engine with 9.5 to 1 compression ratio pistons. A 1/4" long dash after the production number indicates a .010" oversize cylinder bore.

Thanks David, that kind of helps.

Will i be able to see this from above when i open the hood or do i have to crawl under the car

You can see it from above when you open the hood - its at the front top of the engine - across the front edge of the block between the two heads, above the water pump/timing cover and behind the water crossover pipe. Here is a picture. That is the power steering bracket to the right - my car has air ride set up so the bracket might look different than yours.
