The Hooded Mirror!?

Post by MonarchSceptre »

I am preparing to do a factory original restoration on this 58 Century 2dr. The only thing stopping me is my newfound deep love for the driver side fender mirror that came with the find. From what I can Google it is not original though it seems organic to the car but now I can never love anything else. I just can't find even evidence that another one was made. Any ideas on this one's providence or the original style???

my Special has a pair of the same mirrors. i like them better than the plain mirrors.
i have a couple spares i bought on eBay to mix and match better condition parts as well... not sure if they are GM factory parts but will dig one out and check for a part number if i think of it.

Welcome to the forum, very nice project you have there.

That is an original optional mirror, fairly rare. Your restoration will be correct if you keep it. They were generally sold in pairs, one for each fender. My dealer parts book lists them thusly:

10.185 Mirror - Rear View - Outside (Bolt on Type)

981839 Qty. 2 (Non-Glare) Round - Hooded

The more common mirrors that mount to the door are part number 981823 (left) and 981824(right).

Fantastic knowledge set there. If you are willing to sell the passenger side and an extra or three, I'd pay well for them. This one gets printed and put in the book!
